A guide to care choices
How do I check who is providing care?
Get the full names of both the clinician and the pharmacy. Check the public record that belongs to each, rather than relying on a badge.
Where does the doctor check begin?
Use state medical boards to look up a doctor’s current licence status and check for any action the board has made public against that doctor.
Search for the full name and match the details. A board is the state body that licenses and oversees the profession.
In some states, different kinds of doctors fall under different licensing boards.
Check the board named on the doctor’s licence.

The US Department of Health and Human Services is abbreviated as HHS here.
HHS guidance, as of September 26, 2026, said the clinician needed permission to practise in the patient’s location during the visit, through a licence or another permitted route.
Ask the service how that requirement applies to the place you will actually be.
Some states, as of September 26, 2026, let clinicians with a licence from elsewhere register for remote-care permission without getting a full licence in the patient’s state.
Here, registration means meeting the state’s requirements for that remote-care permission. Ask the board whether the clinician needs a full licence or this separate permission, and how to check it.
For a nurse practitioner or a physician assistant, find out which state board keeps the licence record for that profession. A doctor-only search is not a complete check for a different profession.
How is the pharmacy check different?
Pharmacy licences come from state pharmacy boards, separate from the boards that license doctors.
For state pharmacy licence searches, follow the links provided by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA).
Match the name you were given to the record. If the name does not match or you cannot find it, leave that question open and ask the board or service to clarify it.

A clear public board record means no public action is shown; it does not judge the quality of an individual visit.
Keep asking about the assessment, the medicine and follow-up. The record check answers a specific question; it does not answer every question about the plan.
What reading explains these checks?
- Medical boards: information for the public
Explains what a board can tell you and what its public record contains.
- HHS: care across state lines
Explains how an out-of-state clinician can get permission to provide remote care. Ask the state board which permission the clinician needs and how to check it.
